Kasundi Shol Maach (Shol Fish With Kasundi)

Serves five to six people.

Ingredients:
  • Shol maach - 7 to 8 pieces
  • Onion paste - ½ cup
  • Garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Kasundi (type of chili mustard relish) - 4 to 5 tablespoons
  • Ground turmeric - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chili - 3 to 4
  • Mustard oil - 3/4 cup
Preparation:
  • Clean and rinse the fish a few times with water and some salt.
  • Marinate with a bit of turmeric, chili powder and salt.
  • Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces slightly.
  • Keep aside.
  • Use the heated oil to fry the onion paste for about 2 minutes.
  • Add garlic paste, rest of the the turmeric, chili power, salt and 2 tablespoons of water.
  • Cover over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and gently mix in the fish.
  • Add ½ cup of water and green chili.
  • Cover again over low heat.
  • Stir in the kasundi after about 10 minutes.
  • Keep covered.
  • Turn off the heat and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot with rice.
